Hi Annie and Jim,

Sure is quiet here; I just wanted to see if the NG was broken or shutdown.
It's also quiet in the Design Forum.
Hope both of you are doing well and enjoying the summer.

Yes, perhaps we should do an E3 group! My frustration level with Expression
Design has peaked; the only thing I've used it for recently is a job where I
needed to do multiple clones on several objects. It worked well and I even
managed to get everything outputted from ED as .ai files with the help of
E3. It "ain't" what it used to be ...(Sept. CTP...sigh!).

Ya' all take care, ya' hear!
My Best,
Fred

Hi Fred,

My summer is going great and I hope yours is too. It's nice to finally take
some time off. I've been doing this E3/Design thing for more than 10 years
now. I spend most of the day outside; working in the garden, laying in the
sun and just plain goofin' off.

I used Design to create a logo not too long ago but I could have easily done
it in E3.

So, let's plan on getting some E3 discussions in here soon. I still have two
month of goofin' off but I'll be all fired up and ready to go this fall.

I like the idea an E3 group! I have also been thinking about developing a
tribute website for Expression 3/MS Graphic Designer for some time. I have
collected files and tutorials for years. The only thing I miss is EGD
September 2006 which I need for documentation.

Why do you need documentation for the September CTP? I think there's still
some old tutorial sites out there for that version. I'll look around for
them if that would help.

Thanks, but I really need the software. I have kept every version of EGD, but
I cannot find the cd with the september version.... I think it´s gone. Almost
two years ago, so I don´t remember the last features. The idea was to compare
this last version with E3 (and E1 and E2). Too bad...

As both E3 and EGD are firm favourites of mine, I have collected files and
tutorials for years. Almost 300 MB by now, together with all the softwares.
Sooner or later I hope to build a website ala livingcels.com with some of
this stuff. Those applications are so good that I have never stopped using
them.

I bought Expression Design, but there are limitations here that I don´t
like...

E3 is what?

Expression Design 3 ?

I've not been able to get my hands on the latest expression design on
account of me being a fp mvp though everything I do is in ew:( The only
version of Expression Design that worked well for me was a beta version way
way back i think it was expressions3 I can't remmeber that was several
computer breakdowns/and computers ago.... its the only one that worked with
my wacom graphic tablet but then nothing else works with it either.... it
just judders....expensive peice of junk... I'd wanted it to do doodling the
way I do on paper (clarke-abstract-art.com) I've given up.

I think an E3 group sounds great. For the last year or so I have been trying
out various vector drawing packages , at some expense. In order to produce
landscape drawings/paintings. None of the opposition can match E3. It has
the most robust and stable vector drawing tools and what you can do with the
brushes and strokes is amazing.

Hi Wrinklie! Maybe we should turn this into an E3 newsgroup.
I second that. Once my July CTP expired, E3 is the only tool I have
used for my limited web graphics. (I used a beta version of Expression
for a personal WPF app that I built, but that is it.) Nothing I have
ever used had the ease of use of the July CTP. E3 is the next best
thing. An E3 group would be super!

There was silence here for some time, this is probably why one word caused
so much replies... I gonna make a full-functional drawing tool, designed
for tablet's input. Now one may open any raster, convert it to grayscale
vector and edit it (erase something, or draw another lines). So scaling is
a must, course. May be some typical vector ops like distortion of drawn
contorus. Try current variant, if it is interesting for you. I hav no
ideas, how to realize RGB painting. Grayscale image requires only one
parameter, distibuted along drawn curve. So mutual pen's pressure, be
properly recorded, could be used as this parameter. But 3D (RGB) is a
problem. May be tilt, but I'm afaraid it will be too tricky.

Hi Bob,

It's been so long that I'll have to refresh my memory on that stroke
palette. It may have been included in an earlier version of Expression and
it may have been one I created to house strokes shared by other people. It
isn't one that installs by default with Expression 3, though.

I'll get back to you on this.

Greetings, All.
Wow, just one word 'test" seems to have stirred some action... :-)
Annie, Looks like it' more "than just you and me...", that's good!
Blitzwolf, Good idea!...let us know when you get the Expression site going.
Richard, Hello again...Irina has some very nice work at Zazzle. I got
to your site, http://www.smithski.myzen.co.uk/, and your photography is
still awesome.
Germaine, Good to hear school is going well. From your photos, it looks
like you had a good time at Yellowstone.
Andrew, It seems there are still some of us here. What's the latest on
your project(s)?

Annie,
Expression lets a user edit a stroke in a file. So, if a file is opened with a bunch of different
strokes, these can be edited and saved to the library. This means that every time an Expression xpr
file is shared, the strokes used are indeed being shared... even if only inadvertently. The same
goes for Variable Width profiles etc. The sort of thing that makes Expression the powerhouse that it
is.

Regards,
Richard
Bob,
I finally found where the Artistic strokes came from. They were included with Expression version
1. Unfortunately I am not able to share those with you. Sorry. :-(
But thanks for the nice compliment on the Expression class!

Hi Annie
I was looking through your excellent Studio E3 Expression class on
http://www.studioe3.com/lessons/index.asp
when I noticed in your Interface Primer lesson a picture of a stroke palette entitled "Artistic".
I cannot find such a stroke palette in my files. What I can see of it in your picture looks very
good. Is there any way that I can acquire a copy of that palette folder?
Thankyou
Bob Walsh
Wow! We have some serious support here! This shouldn't surprise me though, as Expression 3 is
one great program. I look forward to all the great conversations soon! Of course I'm sticking to
my decision to take the summer off but chatting with all you guys about E3 is certainly
something I'm going to look forward to!

Hi Richard!

This is true. But in the past I asked Alex, of Creature House, if I could
share a texture file from Expression 2 and he was firm in that I was not to
share the file. So, I'm assuming that the sale of Expression 3 to Microsoft
did not include resources from previous versions of Expression. I have no
choice but to honor Alex's request not to share these files.

I spent a lot of time yesterday searching for my collection of Expression
resources and found them everywhere! CD's, floppies, mini cruisers and even
other computers. I'm spending this week sorting through them and putting
them in one place. I have a lot of things to share and soon I'll start
posting them on my web site for download. (I'm starting with reflection maps
from Rich!) Prepare for some goodies soon! :-)

Hi Annie,
I wasn't suggesting that you break any rules. I was merely pointing out that resources may be
acquired from any xpr file which may be available. Whether or not that is right or wrong is purely
academic. Perhaps it serves as a reminder (which never was there in the first place), that should a
user create a custom stroke and supply a valid xpr file with that stroke in use, the stroke is
available for re-use.

Regards,
Richard

there a way to do this in E3?

This is different in E3 compared to ED: Edit>Options>Units> & Grids>Stack gap
size set to zero, Arrange>Stack>Downward. Any solutions?

Yes, the concept is identical, but the steps are different--sorry, I should
have been more specific as follows:

In E3, (v3.3 - build 372) to set stack gap use
File>Preferences>General>Arrangement>Stack Gap Size=0.
Do the blend, then Ungroup, and Select all and use Arrange>Stack>Downwards.
Select all, Group, use Stroke>New Stroke Definition and drag the Stroke Def
Box (B) [in the Tool Box] to align the top of the group of objects with the
Reference Backbone. Make sure the stroke objects fill the Stroke Def Box
left to right to avoid gaps in the stroke. To reverse the path for 'outer
glow' use Reverse Path (K)[ in the Tool Box.] Let me know how this works
for you.

Fred
